Research

Over the course of my career I have explored and expanded the growing field of dance science.  I am an active member of the International Association for Dance Medicine and Science (IADMS) and the Performing Arts Medicine Association (PAMA).  I have collaborated with my colleague Dr. Margaret Wilson on several dance science projects that have been integrated into our department.  These include:

  • Dancer Wellness Screenings: Students new to our department are individually screened for muscular imbalances, structural abnormalities, and overall well-being.  These screenings allows dancers to ask specific questions relative to their dance technique, while enabling instructors to gain a deeper understanding of the specific needs of each dancer.

  • BFA in Dance Science:  This degree track was implemented 6 years ago within our department and allows students to chose a degree track specific to dance science.  The students supplement their training with outside courses in psychology, nutrition, and kinesiology, while still maintaining the highest level of dance technique.  Students also work closely with Dr. Wilson and myself as we conduct research, while also preparing them to develop their own research projects.  This degree track prepares students to pursue advanced degrees in physical therapy, dance science research, dance therapy, medicine, or a range of related careers.

  • Jumping Induced Fatigue Research:  Currently this research is investigating the effects of fatigue on jump alignment and how we might be able to offset those effects through cuing, supplemental training, and feedback.  This study has been ongoing and we continue to modify and explore new measurement techniques.

Publishing and presenting research is a vital part of moving the field of dance medicine forward.  I have published several papers, two for the Journal of Dance Medicine and Science (JDMS), one of the leading journals in Dance Medicine, and one for the IADMS online Teacher's Supplement.  Additionally, I have presented all over the world at the IADAMS annual conference and at the PAMA annual symposium.
